Water quality readings from moving vessels
A multi-tenant dashboard that maps and charts multiparameter sonde readings as survey vessels travel.
A fixed station tells you how one point in a river changes through time. A sonde on a vessel tells you how the whole reach changes along its length. The difficulty is that every reading now needs a position as well as a timestamp, and the vessel is often out of mobile coverage.
How it works
A multiparameter water quality sonde on the vessel is read by a telemetry data logger. Readings are stored on board and forwarded whenever a connection is available. The dashboard places each reading on a map of the vessel's track and charts each parameter over time.
- Track maps built with Leaflet, with readings coloured by value
- Time-series charts for each parameter
- Separate, isolated workspaces so several organisations can use one installation
- Installable on a phone as a web app, so crews can check that data is arriving
Why it is built this way
The platform is plain PHP and JavaScript, with no proprietary runtime. It runs on ordinary hosting, and an agency's own IT staff can take it over.
